Easy Moving

In my classes 'Easy Moving', we move with fun within our own boundaries. While studying LBMS, I learn more and more about 'Bartenieff Fundamentals'. Irmgard Bartenieff worked from inner body connections. We move through these 'fundamental' connections while developping our personal movement patterns, but often forget again at a later age. Practicing and 'remembering' these basic movement patterns helps us to move with more ease and relaxation. Our movement pattern will be enriched, more expressive and more supple. We will 'rediscover' easier movement patterns ('repatterning').
Bartenieffs excersises will increase your insight in your own prefered movement patterns, you will learn alternatives and above all BF is delightful to practice. In my BF-classes conciously experiencing and making discoverings at your own pace will be central. In every class one body connection will form the basis for new discoveries.

'Truly a beautiful and special afternoon, with handy hints, such as the X-excersises and learning to move with more ease. Very pleasant: the soundscape and movement scape. Oh, and yes, that wave: wonderful.' Sandra (private workshop).

LBMS: Laban and Bartenieff

Irmgard Bartenieff (1900 - 1981) was an important student of Rudolf Laban. Laban was the first who analysed the human movement potential thoroughly and who developed a theoretical framework for the observation of movement. Further more he developed a way to note complex three dimensional movement. His work has been invaluable for actors, choreography, modern dance and many other applications.

Laban (1879 - 1958) identified several different components of human movement:

- WHAT is moving (Body),
- HOW is someone moving (Effort-quality)
- WHERE is someone moving (Space)
- The relationship between body and environment (Shape)
Later 'phrasing' and 'relationships' where added. Labans theoretical framework (now called LBMS) is still developing further.
Laban was quite revolutionary as far as his research on Space and his observations on Effort are concerned, the intention or the how of movement. The category 'Body' was less articulated in his systeem. The elaboration of Body must be merited to Irmgard Bartenieff. She was a dancer and physiotherapist who worked with poliopatients and handicapped children. Just like Laban she had a holistic approach to the unity of body and mind. Just like Laban she did not address specific muscle groups or body parts, but tried to enhance the total movement potential and body connectivity of her patients and students. Bartenieff is one of the founders and pioneers of dance therapy.
